The village has a population of over 2,000, measured at 2,352 at the 2011 census. [1] Located approximately 41 miles (66 kilometres) north of London, the village is situated amongst the arable fields of northern Essex.
Beechwood House was built in 1877-78 as a private residence by George Fothergill, [4] a former Mayor of Newport. It was designed in a classical style using Bath stone, by architects Habershon, Pite & Fawckner. [5] In 1900 the Beechwood estate was purchased by Newport Corporation and opened as a public park.
