Less Is More: Furniture You Don’t Really Need

BrightNest is a free site that provides tools and tips to homeowners to help them save money, get organized and keep their homes in great shape.

When was the last time you sat on that bench in your hallway? And do you really use your bedside table? Just because a piece of furniture is popular doesn’t mean it needs to be in your house. A full bedroom set may sound like a must-have, but if you don’t use every piece, you’re wasting money and adding clutter to your home.

Don’t feel obligated to fill empty space with stuff. According to Francine Jay, author of The Joy of Less, a lighter lifestyle can mean a fatter wallet since your money will stay out of furniture superstores and in your bank account. Plus, the less furniture you need to function, the more space you have to work, dance and play!

To clean house, evaluate your furniture. If you don’t use it, don’t need it or just don’t like it, toss it! Need a place to start?
