Hypnobirth: Kate Middleton Considers Natural Birthing Method For Royal Baby

It isn’t news that Duchess Kate Middleton is with child, but the mom-to-be may be considering a surprising approach to childbirth. According to reports, Duchess Kate has been looking into the technique of hypnobirthing for her baby’s delivery.

The Duchess of Cambridge wants to try the most natural birthing process and has looked toward hypnobirthing due to its natural, supportive methods that help to conquer anxiety and the fear of giving birth. Such a natural birthing method would be revolutionary to the royal family, though it’s an established birthing technique.

According to HypnoBirthing UK, hypnobirthing is a “complete birth education programme, that teaches simple but specific self hypnosis, relaxation and breathing techniques for a better birth.” Although its name is reminiscent of  ‘hypnotize’, this method does not involve losing awareness of what’s going on. Instead, it is designed to help take the pain and fear out of childbirth and make it a natural and calming process.

Hypnobirthing, however, is not a replacement for epidurals or other pain reliefs.  It simply helps expectant mothers face the fear of giving birth and channel different techniques to keep them relaxed during labor. This process was first established in the United States by hypnotherapist Marie Mongan based on the theories of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read. Dr. Dick-Read published is findings in his book Childbirth without Fear, where he stated:

"There is no physiological function in the body that gives rise to pain in the normal course of health. In no other species is the process of birth apparently associated with any suffering, pain or agony, except where pathology exists except an unnatural state, such as captivity."

In laymen’s terms, Dr. Dick-Reid set out to prove that human labor doesn’t have to be a painful experience. Mongan then took the findings of Dr. Dick-Reid andused them to give birth to her children in the early 50s. After her success in labor, Mongan developed the HypnoBirthing program and utilized her hypnotherapist skills to teach others how to naturally deliver.

And now, it’s possible this natural technique may be helping the Duchess herself deliver the next heir to the thrown. “Kate has researched various birthing methods. She wants it to be natural, so hypno-birthing is one option that appealed and she has been reading up on it and listening to CDs to get into the right frame of mind,” a source told Grazia Daily.

For all moms-to-be, both royal and not, complete comfort during the birthing process is important. If a woman is in pain, she will likely tense up, based non Dr. Dick-Read's findings, which can make for a more difficult experience. Some mothers feel that being at home or making their hospital room more comfortable helps throughout their labor. While hypnobirthing helps prepare the mind for birth, there are small things that can be done for the birthing environment to achieve the most peacefulness possible for both the mother and baby.
