I started dating my roommate, but hadn't 'fessed up about the relationship to my family. So when they came to visit for the holidays, disaster predictably ensued: My boyfriend felt ignored and no one was happy. I was dating a new guy and brought him with me to a New Year's Eve party. He mingled well with all my friends, but then a few minutes before midnight he suddenly asked to go home. My friend gave us a ride, and when we got to his house, I walked him to the door. He then begged me not to leave, saying he was lonely and that I had ignored him all night. He kept pleading, crying and moaning for a half hour while my friend waited in her car.

The night before our departure [to Europe], I was packing my things when he called and told me it was over. I was speechless. The next day I showed up at the airport alone, and told my parents --who had already paid for his travel expenses -- what happened. I still went on the trip, and spent a not-so romantic week with my parents in Europe.

I broke up with my high school boyfriend a few days before Christmas. I had just switched to a new school, and after I got to know him, I realized he wasn't as cool as I thought. The only problem was that the elaborate photo collage I had made for my family's Christmas present was still at his house and he wasn't going to give it back without a fight.

I realized I was engaged to the wrong guy. Rather than wait and prolong the inevitable, I broke off the engagement a few days before Christmas at the most dramatic location possible: The airport. My fiance thought he was picking me up for a family Christmas vacation, but knowing I was going to end it, I had already booked a return flight for later that day.
