Hidden Gold: Surprising Places Oscar Winners Keep Their Trophy

Cate Blanchett who won Best Supporting Actress in 2005 for The Aviator told InStyle: "It's been in the study recently. It moves around a bit like my family and I do." According to The Boston Globe, it was previously "... on the grand piano because all my friends want to pick it up and pose with it,"

Many stars respect that visitors will be excited to pick up the statue and pose with it. Reese Witherspoon who won her Best Actress Oscar in 2005 for her role in Walk the Line, keeps hers in the living room and makes people give a speech if they want to hold it.

Dustin Hoffman told InStyle, "I used to keep my Oscars out of sight. But now they are on my mantel in my study. What made me change? Probably years of therapy!" Hoffman won Best Actor in 1980 for Kramer vs. Kramer and Best Actor in 1989 for Rain Man

The statue seems to scare more stars than just Hoffman. Gwyneth Paltrow who won Best Actress in 1999 for her role in Shakespeare in Love keeps her Oscar in storage. The Scottish Daily Record quoted her as saying, "I don't want that thing in my house. It scares me."

Many stars treat their Oscars pretty casually. Elizabeth Taylor, Susan Sarandon, Lionel Richie, Sean Connery, and Emma Thompson all kept theirs in the bathroom. Watch out for rusting ladies and gents!

True Blood star Anna Paquin keeps hers "in the bottom of my closet, gathering dust." Anna won her Oscar at age 11 for her role in 1994's The Piano. She told Playboy she keeps it tucked away, "otherwise it would make my friends feel strange."

Actor Timothy Hutton keeps his 1980 statue for Best Supporting Actor in Ordinary People in an anything but ordinary spot in his house, his refrigerator. According to USA Today, his sister stuck it in there during a party, and he never removed it.

Russell Crowe uses his to motivate others, and by others we mean chickens. Crowe who won his Oscar for Best Actor in 2001's Gladiator reportedly keeps his statuette in his chicken coop in the hopes that it will inspire his hens to lay bigger eggs.

Forget storage closets or bathrooms, some stars don't even keep their Oscars! Angelina Jolie who won for Best Supporting Actress in 2000's Girl, Interrupted gave her's to her mother. She told James Lipton on Inside the Actors Studio, "I haven't seen it since the day I won it. I don't hold onto awards because I think it's good not to have them around."

Jimmy Stewart sent his Oscar for Best Actor in 1941's The Philadelphia Story sent it to his father in Indiana, Pennsylvania, who displayed it in the window of the family's hardware store.

Whoopi Goldberg nearly lost her statue that she received for Best Supporting Actress in 1991's film Ghost.  Her Oscar was stolen in 2001 after it was sent out, via UPS, for cleaning. It was eventually found in the garbage at the Ontario Airport in southern California.
