I started with a piece of burlap about a foot wide. Here’s a tip for cutting burlap: pick one of the strings running the direction you plan to cut, and pull it out completely. Guaranteed straight line.

DIY Burlap Wreath

A couple days ago, I showed y’all how I made a wreath out of some natural fabric, trying to mimic a burlap wreath I found on Pinterest with no tutorial. As I was writing up that post, I looked at my inspiration photo again and it dawned on me just how they made their wreath. So I decided to re-attack my poor wreath and try again.
It’s not perfect, but I like it much better than attempt number one.

Next, I folded the strip in half and ironed, then sewed down the long open side. After that, I turned it right side out…

...and ironed again. Then I repeated these steps with another piece the exact same size. Once I had both pieces ironed flat, I started scrunching them.

To do this, you pick a string near the very top of the folded side, not smack in the center, but one or two strings from the top. The side your pulled string is on will become the side that gets glued down, I’ll show you why in just a second. Anyway, pick your string and start to pull VERY GENTLY.

See how the thread I pulled out is not quite the center of the folded end, but one string down? (well, UP in this photo…I had my folded end down.) Ok, let me back track for a second and explain that the sewed edge of the strip is going to be the outside of the ruffle, and the folded edge is going to be the scrunched inside. Anway, pull your chosen string very gently and start to scrunch.

Once you’ve scrunched about halfway, you should be able to follow your same string to the opposite end, and start pulling that end out. Then you just gently continue to scrunch until you have quite a bit of string sticking out of each end. Next, I scrunched up the second piece that I made. Once both pieces were sufficiently scrunched, I took the long strings from each end and tied them in a knot with the edges of each piece touching.

Then I folded the two pieces together, and sewed down the edge.

Next, I laid it all out on top of my wreath to get everything the right size, and create uniform ruffles all the way around.

Once I had it the right size, I tied the other end strings together, and sewed the two sides together just like the first edge. If you are using a string of some sort to hang your wreath like I am, now is the time to make sure it’s in place, because you have to glue down pretty much the entire circle. It’s pretty tedious, and I found that I needed to hold it in place in each spot until it was almost dry,

Once that is glued on, repeat everything you just did using two strips that are an inch or two narrower than the first ones you used. This will be the ruffle that goes on the front of the wreath.

Once both ruffles are glued all the way around, attach any embellishments. I glued on my flowers from my first wreath. (Here’s how you make them.)
