Cyber Monday: What is it?

Cyber Monday refers to the Monday immediately following Black Friday. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and has long been considered to be the kickoff to the holiday shopping season.

Whereas Black Friday shoppers take advantage of sales and specials in brick-and-mortar stores, Cyber Monday shoppers go online for bargains. Initially, shoppers looking for online bargains had to wait until they returned to their offices after the Thanksgiving holiday to have access to computers. On that day, however, most people have home computers and can shop online at any time.

Despite the fact that most Cyber Monday shoppers no longer need to wait until they return to their offices to shop, retailers have latched onto the idea -- and the term -- and often gear sales and specials to that day. A Cyber Monday website was created by The National Retail Federation to provides links, coupons and other Cyber Monday shopping information from over 500 merchants.
