I love sewing. I wish it were easier for me to do. As in, I wish I had a space to sew and set out my things without worrying about the kiddies getting into it. But as it is, for now I am just trying to squeeze in whatever projects I can get done during a nap time. (Like this easy pillowcase) Anywho, this is another quick and easy sewing project.
A little background: our house is in a neighborhood where the houses are right on top of eachother. Like, our neighbor’s house is probably 15 feet from our master bedroom wall. Our master bedroom has a wall with two small windows on it, that I have spent four years trying to figure out how to dress.
I thought about making smaller ones that would just skim the edge of the sill, but the idea I had in mind for the design wouldn’t really have worked for something so small.

The top got cut off of this picture, but basically the top of the windows are at the top line of this photo. So I decided finally that I would just make some cafe curtains that would hang a couple inches below the bottom of the window sill.

First, I measured how large I wanted my curtains to be. Then I cut out the fabric, and hemmed the top.

I folded it over about half an inch, ironed, then sewed a straight line. Easy peasy. (Please ignore my still two-toned kitchen cabinets.)

I was also gauging to see how thick I wanted the patterned area to be. I ended up finding that I wanted the pattern to start 15 inches from the top of the curtain. After figuring this out, I cut out my little piece (which wasn’t really all that little!) and laid it right-sides-together.

I used a yardstick to measure 15 inches from the top of the curtain.

I drew a little line with a colored pencil at four different points along the fabric, then lined the yardstick up with my small lines and drew a long line down the whole thing so I’d have a straight guide for stitching.

I pinned a few pins to keep it in place while I moved it over to my table for sewing, then just sewed a straight line along my guideline. Next, I brought it back to my ironing board and flipped the patterned fabric over and ironed along the new seam.

Now it was time to hem the sides. I folded over about a half inch and ironed.

Then folded it over and ironed again, so that the raw edge wouldn’t be visible. Then I sewed down the side, and repeated the process for the other side.

So I folded over the bottom to the length I wanted the curtain, and ironed one last time. After sewing the straight line across, I had a lot of extra fabric since I overestimated the length so I could change my mind if I wanted. I cut off the extra about a half inch from the seam.

And then it was done! Time to hang! I decided to go with a small tension rod and clips.
