“You want to create a fabulous bar in your home but you don't want something front and center. Why not transform a spare closet into a fabulous cocktail nook that can be closed off when not in use?” suggest Madcap Cottage designers John Loecke and Jason Oliver Nixon. To create this space, “remove the closet doors and hang drapes. Then install either custom or off-the-rack shelves in the space and hit the package store. Voila, get those martini shakers a-shaking!”

Pretty & Practical

“We designed Artisan Restaurant in Southport, CT last year and while planning the fine dining area we realized there was a ‘dead’ corner,” explains Liza Laserow of Laserow Antiques and Interior Design. “To transform it we built a bookcase with open shelving that we filled with Swedish Antique accessories. The cabinets were for the staff to hide extra plates and napkins so we managed to combine what the space needed with an aesthetic point of view that is also practical. The bookcase created a ‘special table’ that has now become the favorite spot for guests to be seated.”

“This kids’ room relies on an organized layout to prevent clutter,” says Laura Bohn of Laura Bohn Design Associates. Worth trying in your kids’ rooms: “Drawers underneath the window sear, a bookcase and an extra-large drawer for large toys underneath the shelving,” Bohn says.

A Closet Without the Clutter

“When it comes to organization, closets are one of our top priorities. There is a place for everything and everything in its place,” say Lydia Marks and Lisa Frantz of Marks & Frantz, designers of Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic closet featured in Sex and the City. “Shoes should be featured and everything else should be tucked away and compartmentalized. For Sex and the City, we showcased Carrie's shoes and dresses, but created lots of drawer space to hide the clutter.”

Dream Kids’ Closet

Marks and Frantz organized this dream closet for two girls. “We showed off their favorite dolls and toys in clear plastic bins and tucked away the rest in baskets with ceramic hang tags that can be labeled and re-labeled with a dry erase marker,” they said.
