10 Things You Should Never Buy New

1. Books

Shop around online, and you're bound to find almost any book for nearly half the price as a brand new one from a bookstore.  These deals even apply to newer releases! People often read them and quickly re-sell them on amazon.com and similar sites.

2. Pets

With all the pets that are available for adoption, you will save tons of money and offer an animal a home who needs one.  Buying a puppy from a purebred dog breeder will run you anywhere from $800-$2,000. If you add up all the additional expenses involved with owning a dog, you'll be glad you didn't lay out that initial dough.

3. Tools

Definitely spring for a new drill or circular saw, but buy used when it comes to simple handheld tools.  If what you need is a hammer, screwdriver or other handheld tool, buy used.  If the tools were good quality in the first place, they will not have depreciated with time and use.

4. Furniture

To clarify, here we're talking simple inexpensive furniture that you don't plan to use forever.  Why spend a ton of money at Ikea, when you can easily find the exact same furniture on sites like craigslist and freecycle.  Especially during the summer, college kids and young professionals are on the move and looking to quickly get rid of barely used furniture.

5. Baby Clothing

As you know, babies grow quickly. They sprout up faster than you could possibly imagine.  Thus, don't spend tons of money on fancy new designer clothing for your baby while they are still rapidly growing.  Hand me downs from friends and gently worn clothing from second-hand retailers will save you loads!

6. Children's games and toys

Again, we can't say this enough, children grow quickly. Make friends with people whose children are slightly older, and chances are you'll be swimming in toys and games that their children have outgrown.

7. Sports and fitness equipment

With so many new fitness programs and diet trends, the turnover for exercise sporting equipment is high. That being said, there are a lot of options for barely used excise equipment.  Similarly, you don't want to spend the retail prices on these things because you may not like it, and it's hard to foresee how much use you'll be getting out of it.

8. Musical instruments

For the germaphobic in all of us, buying a used woodwind or brass instruments may not be the most appealing.  While you may not be interested in owning a used saxophone, second-hand guitars or violins are a great deal! Besides saving you money they are something intriguing about about the instrument having a previous owner.

9. Recreational purchases

Boats, canoes, motorcycles, jet skis, are all so expensive to buy new and the re-sell price will depreciate quickly. Buy these things used.  You never know, the previous owner may have been a workaholic who could never find time to use them.

10. Formal Wear

More than likely, you do not wear a tuxedo everyday. If you're looking to own instead of renting, buy used.  If you're only going to get a  handful of uses out of the garments, it's not worth buying them new.
