Their work uses developed cells that utilize organic matter from the urine to generate electricity.  Though other waste materials have been tested, urine has been the most successful this far due to its electrolyte qualities.

The researchers are currently accepting urine donations from fellow scientists and hope to make big strides in the next few years. With continued funding, they hope to create smart toilets in 2 to 3 years, which will have a device on the side that allows USB devices to be charged with the urine.  Talk about a new way to look at electricity!
