Toilet Freshener Pulled From Shelves After Complaints
After multiple complaints from Ukrainians, the German consumer goods company Henkel chose to pull their brand of toilet freshener from shelves. The reason for the complaints? The yellow and blue colored Bref Duo Stick freshener was said to resemble the Ukraine national flag too closely.
Commented complaints immediately sprouted on the company's YouTube ad clip featuring the product being placed under a toilet rim. One particular comment read, "A delirious idea from uncultured people."
Henkel's general manager for laundry and home care, Tore Birol noted the color choices were not intentionally chosen to resemble the country's flag, though the product was marketed in all of central and Eastern Europe besides the Ukraine. Instead, he said the yellow represented lemon and the blue symbolized water and hygiene. Nonetheless, the product was pulled from shelves in the eastern European market within 3 days of complaints.
"We are very sorry if people were offended by the design of our new product," he said. "We stopped the production, distribution and television advertising (of the product)."
