How To Find The Right Bedroom Lamps

Emily A. Clark's Tips To Finding The Right Bedroom Lamps:

Weight
I mean visually, not literally. Beds are big and need lamps with a little substance that can hold their own next to it. In other words, buffet lamps don’t belong in the bedroom.

Height
I think lamps somewhere between 24 and 30 inches work best for the bedside, depending on the height of your nightstand. Of course, you could always use the trick of putting your lamps on stacked books to give them a little height. It doesn’t make sense to me to have a lamp below the level where I would hold a book if I were to ever actually read in bed. Wall lamps are a good solution to this problem, too, if you’re pressed for space.

To match or not to match?
There’s no rule that says your bedside lamps have to match. I think it’s a matter of taste and can work as long as they are similar when it comes to the height and weight thing I mentioned above. Personally, I’d rather see matching lamps on mismatched nightstands instead of the other way around. But, I think I tend to be more of a symmetrical decorator. . .

And, even if you find the perfect one, lamps can be pricey. My favorite sources are discount home stores like HomeGoods and Marshalls, which can sometimes be a little hit and miss. I’ve also seen some good deals on flash sale sites (like Joss & Main and My Habit that I wrote about yesterday), where you might have a better shot of finding a pair at a good price.
